An introduction to David Carlyle Platts (1940-2024)

David was a British artist and designer whose striking aesthetic sensibility and technical virtuosity deserve wider recognition within 20th-century British art. After an early career in graphic design and advertising, he studied at the Royal College of Art (1967–70), later returning to Yorkshire to combine teaching with a prolific studio practice.

Working across drawing, painting and printmaking, his art moved between abstraction and figuration, most memorably in his celebrated 1970s ‘Strawberry Series’, exhibited at Sheffield’s Mappin Art Gallery. Warm, generous and quietly determined, David remained dedicated to his craft throughout his life, producing a singular and deeply personal body of work.

This new website aims to showcase and celebrate the artist’s fascinating life and significant creative legacy, and to promote projects developed by his Estate. A retrospective exhibition of David’s work is in development and will open in spring 2026.

My work has alway had
a close link with nature…
and the the predicament
we face in life. I’ve been
making pieces that I hope
are profound… some leave
an impression… some are
just beautiful, but I hope
they’re all saying something
from my life experience.”
